It’s not always obvious to patients when they need a dental extraction or another restorative treatment. That’s why it’s important to have the health of your teeth and gums assessed by an experienced dental professional. At Southwest Dental Care, we always want our patients to keep their natural teeth as much as possible, but there are certain situations in which a gentle tooth extraction is the best option. If you have been experiencing tooth pain, sensitivity, or other symptoms, our team would be happy to help you determine the right course of action to take.
What can I eat after a dental extraction?
We recommend stocking up on soft foods before your treatment so that you have plenty of things to eat during your recovery process. Things like blended soups, smoothies, avocados, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and yogurt are all good choices. It’s important to avoid smoking or drinking anything through a straw during this time, as this can cause a painful complication called a dry socket. Anything crunchy or potentially sharp like chips or nuts should be avoided completely until the extraction site is fully healed.
What are my tooth-replacement options post-treatment?
If you are getting one or more teeth extracted due to tooth decay or extensive dental trauma, our team can work with you to determine the best tooth-replacement method for your smile. Dental bridges often work well for patients who want or need a less invasive tooth replacement option and patients who are ineligible for dental implants. One or more dental implants may be a great choice for you if you want a sturdy dental restoration that looks and feels very similar to a natural tooth.
