The lifespan of composite fillings can vary depending on several factors, including the size and location of the filling, oral hygiene practices, and individual patient factors. On average, composite fillings usually last between 5 to 10 years, but with proper care, they can potentially last even longer. During your routine dental visits, our team will examine your teeth as well as your fillings and other dental restorations and make recommendations for when we believe they should be replaced.
How are dental fillings placed?
The first step in the process involves numbing the teeth and gums to ensure a comfortable experience for the patient. Then, the decay is carefully removed using a dental drill and a bonding agent is applied to help the filling bond with the tooth structure. Dr. Orme then layers the composite material into the prepared area, carefully shaping it to match the natural contours of the tooth. A curing light is used to harden the filling, and final adjustments will be made to ensure that the filling looks and feels natural.
Are cavities reversible?
Unfortunately, once tooth decay has affected a tooth, it cannot be reversed. Tooth decay must be removed from a tooth to prevent it from progressing and damaging more of the tooth and surrounding teeth. Once the decay is removed, a dental restoration must be placed to protect the tooth and prevent more decay from occurring. Small cavities typically only need a small amount of area to be “filled in,” which is why dental fillings are commonly used. When decay is allowed to advance, a different restoration, like a crown, must be utilized instead.
